This semester I will try to work for an institution called ‘ANAÇEV’ ( Anadolu Çağdaş Eğitim Vakfı ) for my Community Service course in the department. In my opinion this course is one of the most beneficial courses in our department in terms of helping people as prospective teachers. For this reason it is a very proper decide to choose this institute to provide assistance.
ReplyDelete‘ Anaçev ’,supporting modern education in our country, was founded in 1997. Since that time the institute has been offering new information and methods with education for our citizens by following scientific and technical developments. It has been trying to achieve its aim via pre-school education, student scholarships, and adult education. Among its aims there are teaching read and write to adults, introducing pre-school students with a modern education, providing scholarships for successful students. Of course it has been carrying out all the workings with the help of volunteers and donations. In that sense, I think it is very helpful to be involved in these workings.
As a prospective teacher this will be a great experience to have a chance for teaching English to the students who have different profiles. However, as a human the most significant case here is to provide aid for people who need education. This course enables us to feel essential as a person. It will also provide a feeling of desire for helping people inside us. It is very important to develop this kind of feelings as a citizen.
The institute necessarily needs help of university students like us. Also we should try to help that people in terms of improving their perspectives for their lives. I will try to do my best for my students. I know I will learn a lot of things from them, and appreciate my great experience during my entire life.
When I just think about the name of the course, I feel that I will do something really important for our society. The reason behind my deciosion of being a teacher also comes from the thought that I will help people, not just teaching them English, but educating in many areas as much as I can that is why I want to work with young learners, because I believe that I can give them more than I do for adults. I also worked with İLKYAR voluntarily at METU for a while at my first and second years and I really enjoyed the job I did.
ReplyDeleteIn community service lesson, I believe that working with ANAÇEV will be a great experience for me. I want to go Altındağ and teach English to young learners. The students that ANAÇEV will found for us seek for more information but their parents probably can not afford it, so I expect that they will be willing to learn anything that I tell them.
In our department we have learned lots of things about being a teacher in our methodology courses, however all of them are restricted to just theoretical part, we have not been able to practice more than doing presentations, and when we consider that we will be graduates, in other words real teachers next year community service course will also meet our need for practice. In a real environment, I have not taught a lesson so far and being a teacher without having that experience would be a drawback for me, however after that course I will have enough ideas and experiance to predict what may happen in the classroom, what conditions may prevent me from doing my job, how I can teach better, or improve myself, what students like more ,how they learn more, etc.
Apart from the improvement, or experience part, I will really feel much more comfortable ethically, because I will be doing somethin really good, beneficial for those students who will be in my class, for people who really need me. I will probably feel as a better person for helping those students, and I will feel what being a teacher really means, even more than being a teacher, because when I become a teacher a part of me will do the job to earn money, however for that course I will be doing a voluntary job, and I am sure that is more than being a teacher.
Finally, after we visited all the places and when I felt the sincere environment of the people who hosted us I believe that we will do the most important thing that we can in that course, working with ANAÇEV and with children will be both a great experience and a very helpful behavior for us.
I think, volunteer job is a very necessary aspect for the community to be peacuful, full of happiness and gratitude. It is a nice thing to help others, share the same athmosphere and even sometimes problems. This course, therefore makes us gain a new perspective on life. Rather than just caring for ourselves, our lessons, personal needs, our future goals, etc., we are given a chance to do somethings for other people through this course.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to this, with the organization Anaçev, we have a chance to gain some experience in our teaching area as well as helping people at different ages ranging from small children to students, adult housewives and retired old people. However, since I have chosen the creche and I deal with small children there, who are 3 years old, I don’t have the chance to teach English. Yet, I hope to gain an experience with young learners and have nice time with children.
When I searched on the web in more detail what Anaçev aims or what kind of activities or organizations it has, I saw some useful aims. For example, they provide scholarship for students who are successful but cannot afford their education at all levels, primary, secondary or university education. They give education to illiterate people. In the institutions we visited, we were informed that one of the thins which we could do voluntarily was teaching illiterate people how to read and write. I think, it would be a very nice experience to teach illiterate people. Literacy opens a new path to one’s life. Those people will be able to read news-papers, novels, evrything they want. It is like entering a new world, I guess, and I wish I also had a role on this.
I hope, I can do some help for the small, and lovely children there during the time I am involved in their activities.
For this semester we were given the chance to have our community service class (FLE 352) of our department in ANAÇEV institution where we can be a volunteer and have a little practice before beginning being the real teachers in the future. Also this is a good opportunity before going to the practice teaching class which will be offered in the fourth year. I think that this course will be helpful for young teachers to have prospective about their future profession and formulate the opinion whether or not they had chosen the right way.
ReplyDeleteIn addition young teachers have a chance to understand which age they can teach want to teach; do they like teach young learners or they prefer more adult one?, or they want to work only with elderly people?. This course gives us the chance to think about our future. How we going to be in the future, and how we going to behave with students in the future? What the students look like when they are in class and how to manage them in classroom environment; to see improvements in their behavior and lessons. This is all interesting and good opportunity to gain some experience about your future profession, students and people you will work with.
Moreover having the volunteer work can helpful for us in terms of the intrinsic prospective. ANAÇEV institution is the non governmental institution where they are working only for teaching and informing people about the world they are surrounded and living; also teaching illiterate people who were not given the chance go to school and have appropriate education. Because now we are young and future teachers we should think about people who need our help not only in big cities and town like places but also going somewhere where the real help is needed and qualified teachers are needed. This volunteer help can formulate in us the feelings and responsibilities about people in need and help those people to be literate and help them understand outside world. Because we are future English teachers we can help students to be informed about the culture and the language of British and American people, to be interested in their traditions and compare with their own culture. This comparison will help them understand and expand their opinion about the world and they will be able to understand other cultures as well as their own; doing so they will be open to every culture and explore new things and new languages.
Being a volunteer will help young teachers in many ways like deciding about their future choice in teaching, feelings of responsibilities which is really needed for young teachers, and also having qualification before the stepping into the reality of our life experiences and many other reasons.
I would really appreciate to work with those people and students who ANAÇEV will offer for us to study with, and willingly to teach young and older people who are also willingly to learn something about the culture of other nations.
Community Service… The name of the course seems to be attractive to my teacher and human side. Since I am a second year student, I tried a lot to take this course. I couldn’t wait the next year to take it:) Fortunately, I was able to take the course, and why am I so curious about the course and what do I expect from the course?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I want to express my pleasure for choosing ANAÇEV for community service. That institution is exactly convenient for us. I mean that we have to practice teaching at some institutions as prospective teachers and these places must be the right place for us. For example, I heard some students had gone to prisons for community service last year. I accept that going prison as a volunteer is also a kind of community service, but we have to practice teaching at the right place. From these points of view, ANAÇEV is the correct place in my mind.
I did some research about that institution. They have the accurate features that a charitable foundation must have. They award a scholarship to successful students, provide education, especially literacy education, for adult people. Moreover, they try to enlighten the people who live in suburbs like Altındağ Cumhuriyet Evi which I am expected to go. There are many other services that they are involving in. Their main goal is to create a contemporary society in which we desire to live.
I am expected to teach “Social Studies.” To be honest, I am disappointed because of not teaching English. Although I am disappointed, teaching something to the young learners is still exciting. I think I have to be well prepared before each class because of my deficiency in that area. However, I can use my teaching abilities in class. I believe I can teach everything in my mind about the related subject, so I have to know the subject very well to deliver it successfully. Also, I wonder the place which we will go, classrooms and students. Moreover, it is also exciting not knowing to whom you teach or how many students I will have.
I am really looking forward to going there. I will be appreciated when I share my knowledge with students. I will try to understand their feelings and their needs differently from most teachers do. Most teachers I had until now just tried teach what they were expected to, but I will try to solve their all problems related to their age and to their community.
This semester, we have a great opportunity to develop ourselves, both in terms of our consciousness in social issues and our teaching skills. ANAÇEV provides us this opportunity. It is an organization having a wide range of activities and it addresses not only one part of the society, it works with children, young people, housewives, and even retired people. Its aim is to develop society in many aspects, such as giving reading and writing courses, teaching some skills and making society more developed through both informal education and doing some organizations about social problems and issues in neighborhood. It also provides students with financial difficulties scholarship, which is a wonderful application.
ReplyDeleteAs a requirement of our course, we also became a part of these activities. Our contribution is small, but I think it is great to do something for other people. I will teach Turkish to six-grade students, which I hope will be helpful for them.
I hope this experience will be very helpful for us. As the prospective teachers, we can practice our teaching skills and what we have learned theoretically so far. This experience will gain us a different point of view in terms of teaching-learning process; we look at the situation as a teacher, rather than a student. How can we manage students’ learning, what can we do for them to learn better, how can we deal with problems in learning? I hope we can find answers to these questions till the end of the term.

ReplyDeletefor this semester we will teach lovely children and help them with their english... I hope it will be enjoyful not also for us but also for students. When I have seen my students for the first time I understood that they really need our help because their english is not very good. In addition their parents cannot help them with their homework or to do stuff because they do not know english. So I am really glad that I will be useful for these children. In addition we have a great opportunity to develop ourselves, both in terms of our consciousness in social issues and our teaching skills. as we are going to be teacher we must be ready for these situations. we are young and future teachers we should think about people who need our help not only in Ankara or Istanbul but also going somewhere where the real help is needed and educated teachers are needed. This volunteer help can formulate in us the feelings and responsibilities about people in need and help those people to be literate and help them understand outside world. Because we are future English teachers we can help students to be informed about the culture and the language. As far as I see Students are also entuasitic to be with us. I will teach 5th 6th and 7th grades. I think we must teach them how to study and how to develop themselves and also how to be accepted in ODTU university:)
ReplyDelete‘ Anaçev ’,supporting modern education in TURKEY, was founded in 1997. Since that time the institute has been offering new information and methods with education for our citizens by following scientific and technical developments. It has been trying to achieve its aim via pre-school education, student scholarships, and adult education. I really want to thank ANACEV because of their such aims and activities. such activities are important for the development of the contury. because will be more educated with the help of Anacev. I hope the students those we will teach will benefit from us fully and develop themselves.
To sum up I am really glad to be involved in this program and I will try hard to help these nice children.
As a voluntary work, I will go to the kindergarten in Çay yolu. Although I first heard about this institution at the beginning of this semester, I learned that it is a very active and beneficial institution for a large number of people from students to housewives. Therefore, I am proud to be a part of this team of voluntary workers. I think and I hope my working there will be beneficial to me, to the children and the teachers there. Since I will work with children, I think I will learn how to deal with young learners of English. Learning how to deal with them, how to communicate with them and how to teach them English will help me a lot for my career in the future. Another point is that I am really afraid of being a teacher. Especially I am afraid of teaching young learners because it is difficult even to understand and communicate with them. Because of this reason I think this will give me an idea about the characteristics of young learners. With the help of this course I hope I will get away with my doubt or worry about teaching young learners. Even having some time with children and trying to communicate with them will give me a lot in terms of understanding their characteristics. Another good point is that, in the kindergarten we will observe the English teacher and get some tips on teaching English to young learners. Absolutely we will learn a lot of things in a course named 308 Teaching English to Young Learners that we are taking this semester, but we don’t have a chance to put that theoretical information into practice. If the manager and the teacher allow us to teach some English to the children, I will have a chance to put theoretical information into practice. I can teach some simple words or some nice songs to the children. In this way, the children will learn something extra from their program of English course and maybe they will enjoy learning English from a different person because I know that the children love change. Furthermore, if I am able to teach something to them, it will give me a great self confidence and a sense of success in my profession. Therefore, it will be my first work experience. Besides, teachers may have a rest when I am there. For instance, I can play some games with children or read them stories. In this way, I think I can decrease the burden of the teacher a little and give her some time to relax. If I realize all these things, I will feel happy to do a real “community service” because only if I did something beneficial to other people, this course will reach its aim.
ReplyDeleteIn conclusion, I expect a lot from this course. Gaining the first real life experience of teaching English, gaining some self confidence at the same time helping the people who need us are the main expectations of me.
First of all, I want to state that I am very excited because I am going to contribute the educational improvement of Turkey via Anaçev. When Işıl Hoca first told me that we were going to go to Anaçev for community service, I searched Anaçev on the internet and I asked a few people what they knew about Anaçev. I have learned that Anaçev was founded in order to support the education of Turkey, to spread the education throughout Turkey, and to give modern education to citizens of Turkey. Besides, it gives scholars to students who don’t have enough money to go to study. People who helped Anaçev’s foundation include important names like Prof.Dr. Ahmet Taner Kışlalı, Prof.Dr.Türkan Saylan, Prof.Dr.Rüştü Yüce, Rıza Gürsoy, Dr. Tekin Özertem, and Prof.Dr. Mehmet Haberal. It has a 13 years old history as it was founded in 1997. When I look at the founders of the institution I feel that it is one of the institutions which aim to modernize Turkey via education. Anaçev aims to reach poor people who don’t have the opportunity to take education. I believe what they do is great. Turkey can be a developed country only if it achieves to educate each citizen, so the people who work day and night there are nameless hero of the modern Turkey. I think they are sincere followers of Atatürk. I am very happy that I will contribute to this institution. Before, community service, I have worked for some charity organizations. For example, we prepared CDs for blind people so that they can study for ÖSS. However, this is the first time that I will teach for such a big and organized charity organization. I will teach in Anaçev which is in Birlik District. I will teach them reading and writing in Turkish. There are two difficulties for me in this project. One of them is that Birlik District is in a remote part of Ankara and very far from METU. Therefore, I need to get on two buses. One is from ODTÜ to Kızılay, the other is from Kızılay to Birlik District. The other problem is I don’t know how to teach reading and writing in Turkish. If the language that I was supposed to teach was English, that would be much easier because I have been trained for that. I know Turkish well but I don’t know how to teach it. On the other hand, I am so enthusiastic that I am sure I will figure out something. In addition, my students will be older than me and they will be house wives. I think I will have an unique teaching experience
ReplyDeleteThis semester, we have been given a wonderful chance to develop ourselves, both in terms of our consciousness in social issues and our teaching skills.ANAÇEV provides us this great chance.

I will teach reading and writing to housewifes. I think it will be a great fun to teach people to read and write because these two are the main things for people life.Reading and writing facilitates the human life and I am very excited to provide this. These skills make people awere of the life and I will be a part of this awereness, this is a great feeling. Helping people will also make me very happy and comfortable. I think this experience is a great chance in order to be beneficial to the society and to help to develop the country.
At the end of the semester I think I will be more sensitive and patient towards people by the help of this course. This experience will also help me in terms of teaching, I think I will get rid of my fear about teaching and I will be more eager to teach and my selfconfidence will also insrease.
This semester I will take FLE352 Community Service course. When I think about its name, it seems that this course will help me to serve for my country. And this course will also help me to develop myself. When I heard that we will be working for Anaçev(Anadolu Çağdaş Eğitim Vakfı) I searched for information by using internet.
ReplyDeleteI found that Anaçev was founded in 1997 to support our country via pre-school education, student scholarships and adult education. For the things it has done Anaçev was awarded as one of the most successful eleven waqfs by Prime Ministry Directorate of Waqfs in 2001. When it comes to its goal, Anaçev's aim is: by educating people, beginning with individuals to society, reaching contemporaneousness, establishing it and securing its continuity. To do this Anaçev give scholarship to successful but poor primary school, secondary education and university students, beginning initially with read-write, Anaçev give education adults who couldn't receive education. Anaçev also introduce pre-school children with modern education.
I hope I can contribute to our country's modern education. I will try my best to do it throughout this semester. I learned that I will give English course to 4th-5th grade students. It will be a pleasure for me. By doing this I will learn lots of things and it will be a great experience for me.

ReplyDeleteVolunteering for a non-profit organization is a proper way to learn to share the ideas and understanding which binds a community together. With the help of such kind of activities, even the people who do not share anything in their daily life could come together and learn to work together with a common purpose. Before I took Community Service, I had an experience related to volunteer work and serving for a specific group of the community. I am a volunteer member of İLKYAR, the organization visiting the students at Boarding Primary Schools (YİBO) which were established in the rural areas of Turkey. I was also volunteered to teach English to the students who came from the towns of Ankara. I experienced lots of things there. For example, I learned how to communicate with young learners. There was a mutual understanding between me and the students. I also gained the experience of the teaching method. In the community service, we are also expected to help people who are in need. Although the organization and the mission are different for this time, I expect to have similar experiences and feelings in ANAÇEV as all voluntary issues are usually carried out with the same feelings such as sharing, devotion, generosity, empathy, desire to change something, etc.
As for the course Community Service, I think that it is a necessary course for pre-service teachers in order to be acquainted with the needs of the different groups (whose ages change) in the community and understand the importance of meeting these social needs of the community. I think that ANAÇEV offers one of the best opportunities for us to help people. I would like to work with the young people whose ages are between 2-6. I believe that I can deal with those youngs. As, I enjoy spending time with young students. I can understand what kind of needs do they have and I can approch to them accordingly. I expect that working with the students who will contribute to my personality, strengthen my sense of empathy, decrease my prejudices and increase my motivation to believe that anything we claim to be impossible could actually be quite possible. I think all my expectations can be fulfilled if I manage to contact with the students and do my best both for their success and friendship. I also expect to have some experiences in teaching before I begin my profession. I believe that I can have some positive experiences as a teacher in this organization.
My aim is to increase my awareness of the lives of these people in order to provide with the equality of opportunity in education as much as I can. I will do my best to understand them both as my students and as individuals. I hope that I will be concentrated on my duty, but at the same time share something with them for the beginning of a good friendship. In addition, I will be in an environment in which I have the role of a “teacher “for the first time. I will have some relationship and cooperation with my branch coordinator, obey a lesson program, control the class, follow their progress closely, etc. I will have the opportunity to feel like a “teacher” and work as a teacher and I believe that I will do as much as I can and behave like a teacher both for my benefit and the students’ benefit.
Finally, I should say that I am very excited about being in such a voluntary work and ready to contribute. I think that while I teach the students, they will also teach me lots of useful things. I hope that I will have good relationships and friendships both with the students and other volunteer teachers which I will never forget.
When I heard this course in a first time, I hadn't have any idea about it. I hadn't known how it looks like. Then, I asked to my friends who have an experience in it. They told me that it is such a course which deals with teaching. Since, I'm going to be a teacher, I was really happy because I got the opportunity to teach in my early age. However, I worried about I was going to overcome it because I'm a foreigner and I don't know the Turkish educational system. When I learned that ANAÇEV is not a part of MEB, instead it is a part of some charity work, I got relaxed. Then, I started to think about our methodology courses and I decided to apply what I have learned in methodology courses. However, the problem was that I'm shy and I don't feel comfortable in front of people. Then, I learned that we were going to teach students who are between 10 and 12 years old. This information made me relax because I like children very much. Also, these children are coming to ANAÇEV to learn English because they don't have a chance to go to special courses. Therefore, this work will be charity work and we will go there voluntarily. Also, I want to say many thanks to my department and to you because of the chance being given to do some charity work. I'm really excited and I'm ready to see children whom I'm going to teach English.
ReplyDeleteEXPECTATION PAPER
ReplyDeleteWhen I heard about the course in the very beginning of the term, I thought I wanted to take it. Because, I always wanted to help people in some ways and the way of it was standing in front of me and it was a course. I really liked the idea of taking that course. So; I wanted to search on this course by asking the students who took the course before. They told me they did various jobs such as teaching, working in military, rest house etc. Yes, they were really exciting; but since I would be a teacher, I wanted to teach to the people who really needed it.
Helping your country’s people without expecting anything, yes, that was the real patriotism. And, of course I would want to do that. I had worked for people before. I was the responsible for the AID CAMPAIGN OF ATATÜRKÇÜ DÜŞÜNCE TOPLULUĞU at METU. I had done so many things to take some aids to the little children in a primary school in Hatay. I was a little aware of the pleasure of helping people un requited.
I chose the Organization in Altındağ; because Altındağ is indevoloped, far away from the city center, and in the suburbs. The life standards in Altındağ aren’t essentially high. They really need help that will come from us. I hope they will get the advantage of being helped.
Moreover, I hope that I will be able to practise the methods that I learned and am still learning. At the courses at METU we can not practise them so efficiently; so that will be a good opportunity for me and us to relate and adabt to the real life.
As for Anaçev, I don’t know much about it. I have a friend who takes scholarship from that organization. They not only support succesfull people financilaly, they also make the students improve by means of various aspects. For example, my friend went to Capodacia with that organization; then he attenden an activity on which Turgut Özakman, the wiriter of “ ŞU ÇILGIN TÜRKLER” gave a brifing to the students. The organization’s aim is to enlighten our country, to create more modern, educated, literate, civilized and peaceful society and Turkey. So, I am happy for that I will service an organization whose aims are same with mines.
I am in the opinion that it will be a great experience for me. Thanks to everyone who supllies me with those opportunities.
I think ANAÇEV is a well organized non-governmental organization; people working there try to do everything to help people. They work there not to gain money but only to help people. They were happy to see us going there to work for them. All of us were volunteers to work there, as it is our department nearly all of us wanted to teach English but some of us must have done other things such as teaching computer, teaching Turkish grammar, teaching reading and writing to adult learners etc.
ReplyDeleteI suppose I will teach English to young learners but I can also do other things; it doesn’t matter what I teach, the most important thing is I want to work with them and help people who are in need of help.
If I teach English it will be a good experience in my own field but if I teach other things it will be better for me, because next year we have practice teaching and we will gain experience then. However if I teach things different than my field it will be better, as I teach I will also learn everything related to that topic. For example If I teach Turkish grammar, I will remember the Turkish grammar, because I forgot lots of thing in grammar.
I also will learn more about what to do as a citizen. It will be a good experience in the way of being a good citizen.
Ahmet ÖZKAN
When I first heard about the course,I said to myself : "Yes this course is for me!" And Işıl Hocam, You know how much I tried to take this course.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, course has an attractive name : "Community Service".As candidates of teachers,we will always in community and I think this would be a real and great experience for us.As we all know, our school experience is at +th year of school and I think it's a little bit late to meet the students. So this course will help us get accustumed to teaching.
I searched a bit about ANAÇEV and I learned a lot things about them. They are a non-governmental foundation and never take money from government.Their all aim is to help people. And I think it will be best foundation for such a course.
As a choice, I wanted to choose Doğantepe-Altındağ.That's because it is a shantyhouse neighbourhood and there are people who really need help there. And when we begin to work, maybe we won't work in big cities always. So it will be a practise for me.I want to do whatever I can do for my students there. They deserve the opportunity of education.
I hope it will be a fruitful and great semester with our diffirent-structured course.
I hope,we will collect really good memories from our voluntary service and never forget this experience.
May it be easy for everyone and good luck! :)
